Children’s activities this summer au Pays du Mont Blanc

That’s it . . . school is out for many of us au Pays du Mont Blanc . . . some of us may be going away, some of us may be staying in the mountains, many of you may be visiting our majestic mountains, valleys and lakes!

So here are some of the MBFF highlights for family/children’s activities au Pays du Mont Blanc over the summer months: longer workshops, shorter weekly workshops, storytimes, festivals & concerts, funfairs, open-air cinemas, guided walks and events for the diary . . .

Longer workshops & stages
Cat Kartal «Art & Nature» (Chamonix)

Cat Kartal is an artist who lives in the Pays du Mont Blanc and, as well as running an art studio and producing her own work, she runs the «Art & Nature» workshops for children (6 to 12 year olds) over the summer. This summer, she is offering 3 separate weeks in August: from the 7th to the 25th (daily or weekly options from 10h15 to 17h15).

The aim of these workshops is to complement a walk in nature with creative activities; this sounds like the perfect balance!

Artistes en Herbe (Argentière)

The Étape association in Argentière is organising a creative workshop for children (from 7 to 12 years) called «Artistes en Herbe» from the 10th to 13th July, from 14h to 17h30.  The theme of the workshop will be Nature & Environment, and the cost of the workshop is 10€ per day, including a snack.  There will be a show organised at the end.  Contact l’Étape for more details: 06 78 53 59 06; Facebook Page l’Etape;

Vallogrimp (Chamonix Valley)

Vallogrimp is a popular climbing school offering various climbing workshops (including canyoning and alpinism) for children (4+ years) over the summer up in the Chamonix Valley.  They fill their places very quickly for the summer courses, but there may be some cancellations, so do check!  If you’re not lucky enough to get a place this year, there are plenty of companies offering climbing lessons to children au Pays du Mont Blanc.

Altimove (Chamonix)

Alti’Move dance school in Chamonix is offering street dance workshops from Monday 17th to Wednesday 19th July and from Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th July from 17h to 18h15 for 7 to 10 year olds and from 18h15 to 19h30 for 11 to 14 year olds.  The price is 30€ for 3 days or 25€ for Alti’Move members. In the Chamonix Valley, Cap Loisirs (MJC) offers activities over the summer months . . . it is worth checking to see if there is any availbility left.

The Globule Radio workshops in Chamonix allow children to discover the different aspects of radio and to put together their own radio programme.  See website for more details about summer stages. These workshops come highly recommended by a friend!

Secteur Jeunesse at the FJEP (Passy) 

For older children this summer (11 to 15 years) in Passy, there are various workshops & outings being offered by the FJEP at the Parvis des Fiz:

  • a film-making course from Monday 10th to Thursday 13th July from 10h to 17h, with a presentation of the film on Friday 15th July, at Cinéma Plateau d’Assy (Assy Award);
  • Tour des Fiz outing from Monday 10th to Thursday 13th July;
  • Le Tour des Lacs de la «Yaute» outing  from Monday 17th to Friday 21st July (10h to 17h30);

Palais in Megève 

The Palais in Megève is offering lots of really interesting workshops of 3 to 5 days over the summer months, for children aged 4+/5+ years up to 12/13 years . . . for example: acrobatics, yoga, team sports, judo, balance, English, fashion design, circus, ice-skating, theatre, dance, creative fun,  . . . Every Wednesday afternoon during the summer holidays, from 14h to 17h, Peinture dans la Nature is offering outdoor painting classes and creative walks around the Moraine of Argentière . . . there will be painting on stone, field and stone creations.  Art supplies and snacks will be provided and the classes are open to everyone, from 6+ years! I had the pleasure of visiting the Chalet des Créateurs this week, and I can testify that it is an inspiring place – bringing together artists from the region and showcasing their work . . . we came away with a present for my son’s teacher!  And, as well as being a gallery, the Chalet des Créateurs also hosts lots of workshops over the summer for children. For the 12th edition of this event, cowboys are setting up camp in Megève, in the Jardin du Musée de Megève (address: 66 rue du Comte de Capré, 74120, Megève).  Some of the workshops: «La tente du yankee» – a talk about the Far West, its history; «Arcs et tomahawks» – learn about the Amerindian bow and arrow (for 7 to 14 year olds); «Les jeux sur table» – board games for all! «Les jeux d’adresse»: cornhole, chamboultou, jeu de quilles; «Les jeux amérindiens» – games played by certain Amerindian tribes; «Les petits indien» – make and Indian headress with coloured feathers! Les Chavantures – Wednesday 26th July (Lac des Chavants, Les Houches)

«Les Chavantures» (12ème édition)  this adventure games day for children 8 to 12 years will run from 8h30 to 17h and the price is 7€ (with meal and snack included). «Les Chavantures» is based on a popular TV adventure game . . .  six games are planned over the course of the day, 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon and there will be a BBQ at midday with entertainment. The prize-giving will be at the end of the day, with show from Acro Bike.

Soirée Estivale au Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard: «Alice au Pays des Merveilles» – Tuesday 25th & Thursday 27th July (near Annecy)

Les Enfants d’Abord – 8th to 11th August (Sallanches)

During 4 days, the quais and the centre of town in Sallanches are dedicated to the fun of children!  This really is a fantastic initiative from Sallanches and all of the shop-owners and volunteers involved!  There are workshops galore, adventure games, dance, circus acts, magic, music, bouncy castles and shows each evening. The fun is from 15h30 each afternoon from Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th August.

This is the 8th edition of this ever popular music festival which takes place in the Chamonix Valley and its environs.  We are treated to a whole host of amazing musicians playing for us in majestic locations, many of them at altitude . . . so we can either walk or take a cable-car to get there!  This year, the Parc Couttet in Chamonix will be the headquarters of the festival, with a large stage set up for concerts and next to the Maison des Artistes . . . here you will find food stalls and merchandising. And the festival will be back at the Mer de Glace this year too.

The Fête des Guides was set up in 1924, with the aim of giving a financial boost to the Caisse de Secours . . . it is now one of the unmissable events on the social calendar of the Chamonix Valley! As well as being a great event for the whole family due to the entertainment around town, the Ultra Trail Mont-Blanc is also putting on a host of events for little ones on Wednesday 24th August from 15h to 16h30 in the Champs du Savoy in Chamonix. The races are free for children 3 to 13 years, and you can sign-up on-site! You can pick up race bibs from 11h to 14h30 and there will be a little snack at the end of the races. The races will not be timed and there will be no “classement“!  For older yougsters, the 14/15 year olds, there is the Foulées des Minimes on Tuesday 23rd August at 17h30 at the Place du Triangle de l’Amitié in Chamonix, a race of about 3,5km (sign-up on-site and get bibs from 14h).

Storytime for Children


Over the summer months, the Pays du Mont Blanc is hosting lots of storytime sessions for children . . . there are plenty of fantastic initiatives to be found throughout the week! Here are the listings for July (August to come!):

Summer is the time for outdoor cinemas!  As long as it’s not raining, that is!  But don’t forget all the films for children/families being screened by Cinébus in Les Houches on Wednesdays, at the Cinéma de la Caméra in Plateau d’Assy on Mondays, by the MJC Saint-Gervais on Thursdays (and, of course, the VOX in Chamonix and Cinéma Mont-Blanc in Sallanches)!  Here are some dates for your diary au Pays du Mont-Blanc!

Many of the walks offered this summer for families au Pays du Mont Blanc & beyond come from Asters, Conservatoire des espaces naturels de Haute-Savoie, which promotes our local patrimoine through walks and activities. Fêtes Foraines

A huge funfair is set up in Sallanches for five days, up and down the quais from 27th July to 1st August!  Fun for the whole family and a really beautiful and refreshing spot for a fête foraine!

More activities

Combloux has so many FREE events set up for children over the summer that it makes me dizzy just reading through the list!  Here are a few of them . . .

Mondays: «Découverte glisses sur le pumptrack» – Pumptrack Combloux14h to 18h – come and discover the new pumptrack in Combloux, a track made of tarmac, with bumps, hills and bends / all equipment can be borrowed: scooters, BMX . . .  / partner: Intersport Combloux – in the event of rain, the activities will be cancelled and games offered instead at the Tourist Office / adults must remain responsible for their children! / address: 132, route de la mairie, 74920, Combloux;

Thursdays: Praz-sur-Arly is offering Ateliers Créatifs every Thursday (and plenty more activities like throughout the week: face-painting, meeting Draz the Dragon . . . )
